![]() SVB was flooded with $170 billion in fresh deposits during the 2020/2021 tech VC bubble, which it made the fatal mistake of investing in long duration Treasury bonds/MBS to earn a mere pittance in yields when bond prices were at literally 200-year highs. In retrospect, the Achilles heel of SVB was that a mere 3% of its deposits were below $250,000 and thus 97% of deposits primarily from VC funded startups were uninsured. It does not surprise me that its CEO sold $3.6 million in SVB shares only two weeks ago because he knew he had mismanaged its balance sheet risk on a colossal scale. ![]() Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was not a Mickey Mouse institution but the banker to the world's preeminent tech/healthcare venture capital ecosystem, with $201 billion in assets, the 16th largest bank in the US.
